The name "Shiba" in Japanese means, Brushwood which could mean the color of its coat or the terrain it hunted in. "Inu" means Dog. That is the end of our Japanese lesson! World War II almost destroyed this breed by the bombings and by distemper. However, thankfully someone crossed bloodlines to make this breed we have today.
